Autumn tidy

Time to cut back any perennials that have finished flowering and remove foliage that has died back. Don't over do it though - retain seed heads of grasses and alliums as well as foliage that is still fresh. Keep on top of fallen leaves - a thick layer will kill off the grass below and encourage slugs and snails. I also cut back hardy annuals in pots to encourage a flush of growth before re-potting with bulbs. Weed paths and edge borders to make the most of what your garden has to offer through these autumn months and show off autumn flowering shrubs or perennials to their best.
