Herringbone brick path surround by country cottage style planting

Photographs Michael Crockett

This previously unloved front garden was transformed into a thoughtfully structured space that encourages year-round use. A semi-circular pathway, laid in a striking herringbone pattern with reclaimed brick, guides you through the garden, offering a seamless connection between different areas. The curved form of the path subtly leads visitors to explore, ensuring the garden remains inviting regardless of the season.

To create privacy and delineate the space, a natural screen was introduced between the driveway and the garden using evergreen hedging and vertical planting, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical separation. Topiary forms provide structure, anchoring the design, while the balanced symmetry of the layout adds a sense of order and harmony. The planting scheme is generous and abundant, complementing the design's architectural elements. The season starts early with spring bulbs and shade loving perennials like Pulmonaria 'Sissinghurst White', followed by Astrantia 'Shaggy' & Digitalis f. albiflora creating highlights in amongst the vivid blues of Geranium 'Johnson's Blue' &  Phlox 'Blue Evening'.  Later in the year the dark hues Anthricus 'Ravenswing' are paired with the Anemone 'Honorine Jobart' and spires of  Veronicastrum 'Fascination'.
