Recent research has concluded that February is the best time to plant bare-root shrubs and trees. If the soil is not frozen or saturated make the most of this opportunity – it’s not long before the soil starts to warm up and new roots will start growing. It’s also a good time to re-pot or top-dress container grown shrubs – although still dormant, warmer weather is around the corner; the shrubs will benefit immediately from the added nutrients.
I’m going to sow some Broad Beans ‘Crimson Flowered’ and Dwarf French Beans ‘Speedy’ this month and put them in my mini greenhouse. It’s too small to heat so it will be perfect for getting a head start on the veg for my tiny plot.
